The Revolution Will Not Be Printed, Nor Would It Be Televised

Janet Jackson released a new statement via her website on Friday reading:

Hey Guys,

I am soooo happy you are loving my US Weekly cover. But believe me, that's just the beginning. Because u r the fans, I want you to be the first to know that I'm on my way to New York to be photographed by the fabulous Ruven Afanador in high fashion style for my upcoming Essence cover.

The stylist will be the incredible Freddie Lieba-- check him out-- he's in Style Magazine's main fashion man. Then it's gonna get even hotter when I land in Miami on June 2nd to shoot a super sexy Vibe cover. If you get the chance, keep watching ET and Access Hollywood to see what's new in my life as they will have insider info about the release of my new single, album and video. It's great to see that the labels are keeping an ear to the ground on the fan scene; scoping out message boards and even after discovering on my web tracking, taking a look at fan sites. Indeed so far we have seen a more "approachable" and "sincere" "Janet".

Maybe it's just me but I keep getting these recurring visions. They're of a web savvy urbanite nonchalantly crafting quotes punctuated by fashionably corporate plugs and inconsistant net jargon. Thus, adding to my growing suspicion that Janet Jackson online is non other than a Fembot. You know... a machine running under the guise of a blended retrospective collage. Not only is she quoted but if you press her buttons the right way, she just might sing for you. Not sure what I mean? Just click here.

To date, the first person I saw who seemed to actually "get it" as far as marketing artists over the web is none other than *drumroll please* LaToya Jackson. Yes I did say LaToya Jackson! Why? Well, at least when she first started her website, the concept behind creating the guise of sharing an artist's most treasured and rare gems within a virtual community was well put together and the thing is... it actually WORKS!

Michael Jackson's "people" planned the same thing with MJJSource.com, made an approximated half a million independently and fell flat on its face when communication with the artist dwindled, leaving fans high and dry. There was probably a fraction of the featured promises for
the site's virtual community kept. Half a million isn't too bad especially after considering the site was an independent site that flopped out of circumstances that could have been controlled. Unfortunately the only people who really lost out were the fans!

Given all of this, here's my two cents about markerting an artist online.

My 2 Cents For Marketing A Recording Artist Online
Rule #1 Communication Communication Communication
Yes and even if your artist doesn't really care to communicate.. that's the best part of the internet... they don't have to... all you need to do is create the impression that it's REAL! I'll get to that part in a moment but first communication.

So why communication? You want to establish and maintain a relationship with the people who are actually willing to part with their hard earned money to purchase the artist's products rather than to easily download it illegally for free. *wake up call* music no longer "sells" to the masses as it did prior to peer to peer sharing, even if it's from an established artist. In so called, Wall Street terms, music is a commodity that has been devalued on the retail market with the rise of the information age. Consequently the demand is information (and yes this also applies to recording artists) and in order to deliver that you need communication. You need to establish and maintain a relationship, a close one in fact to get a very clear sense as to what is in demand from your market. If you establish a great relationship by communicating effecively and efficiently, your market will literally tell you what products they'll purchase from you.

So how do you do this? Create a virtual community, set up viral and buzz marketing campaigns across the world wide web. Your artist doesn't necessarily have to slave over a keyboard tinkering away to get their message across either. Creating a virtual community is rather easy and can be fully automated. Seeing that this blog is about Janet Jackson, I will use her as an example.

I'm sure that many fans, enthusiasts and admirers would love to have exclusive access to certain things. In the world of the Internet and recording artists, access is in high demand. In the case of Janet, I'm quite certain many fans, enthusiasts and admirers would not mind paying an annual fee to have access to rare videos, photos, music and even the opportunity to receive limited edition issued products such as unreleased concert tours, posters and the like. Not to mention, preferred seating at concerts and events, passes to meet and greets and even perhaps special exclusive one time live chats and streaming web performances. Even better yet, impromptu chats and performances. The possibilities are endless. Even streaming video updates straight from the horse's mouth, uncut and unedited. The more raw it appears, the more convincing it becomes because for just one second the artist actually becomes "real" within a virtual space and the user feels a part of their undocumented world. Otherwise your artist looks like a cross between a puppet and a robot.

What's even more fascinating is the more personalized the delivery of the information and access, the more loyal the member becomes. The more loyal the member becomes,the more products the member purchases. I guess the more heart the artist or their people have in approaching and reaching people online, the better the results.

So Janet has officially motivated me to learn how she has those fabulous abs. She lost her signature mid riff for a movie role which she later had to relinquish as production conflicted with her album release.

Us Weekly received an exclusive into how Janet Jackson lost a dramatic 60 pounds over 4 months. Her secrets are said to be revealed in Us Weekley's article already out on newstands.

Fans seem to be generally pleased with Jackson's revived "look". At the age of forty, the songstress still looks stunning however the images portrayed could lend itself to something more tasteful. To me Janet has been a welcomed antidote for walking the tight line of the sensual and the sexual without falling vicitim to the popular tacky image that plague many pop tarts today. Maybe I've been spoiled by Janet's previous classy caliber. Needless to say, she still dons a fabulous figure and is an inspiration to stick to a disciplined regimen.

It Takes 20 Years To Be This Good And 40 To Look Even Better!

The Rise, Fall And Anticipated Comeback of Janet Jackson

For Janet Jackson turning 40 has her feeling 20 years young. This according to her current beau, Jermaine Dupri who is also the associate producer of her up coming album to be titled "Twenty Years Old".

The album's title also marks the amount of years Janet has managed to reign the charts, set and break trends simultaneously and even spark a controversial debate nationwide. Indeed 2 decades in the industry marks a landmark where up and comers consider a successfull career to span merely 2 years!

Given all of her accomplishments to date, what's next for Janet?

Well, May 1st 2006 saw a surprise track released from Jackson's official website where she covers a remake of Debbie Deb's 80s smash, "Lookout Weekend". The release commanded a lukewarm response among fans prompting a statement from Jackson the following day reassuring them that the song was not on the new album but a surprise gift.

Perhaps Jackson's future success could be in resting on the laurels of the fan loyalty cultivated over a 20 year span. If that's the case, there's a lot of work to be done.

The disconnect between Janet and her fans falls out of the anticlimactic release of her previous Damita Jo album where a lacking connection to her fans saw the disbanding of her official fanclub at the end of 2005.

In typical fandom style, there is an air of alienation among a silent but ever present majority, longing for a more "approachable" and "sincere" songstress. Will this come with the new album? Time will only tell.

Despite the grim appearance, the silent majority that has been pampered by Jackson's high caliber projects for the past two decades are eagerly anticipating what she might have up her sleeve for this album. Despite the forum debates, there's a unanimous air that it's just about the right time for a great comeback!

MyJanetBlog.com Set To Relaunch May 15 2006

[My Janet Blog]A new Janet Jackson era has begun and I figure that there's no better time to relaunch My Janet Blog, a blog about Janet Jackson on the day before Jackson's birthday.

There are a few new features to the website, one being My Janet Blog, the new domain for a site commonly known to fellow Janet Jackson fans on the world wide web.

Additional features will include, a video blog called My Janet Vlog, providing the latest Janet Jackson news via a streaming video editorial and a refined virtual dance portal where Janet Jackson fans can learn Janet Jackson's dance moves online.

There's a lot of work to do for the relaunch and I'm hoping that all the fans will like the new version of the website.
